چکیده
The recent availability of molecular targeted therapies leads to a reconsideration of the treatment strategy for patients with distant metastases from medullary thyroid carcinoma. In patients with progressive disease, treatment with kinase inhibitors should be offered.

Cabozantinib for progressive metastatic medullary thyroid cancer: a review
Medullary thyroid cancer is uncommon and patients typically present with advanced disease. Treatment options for patients with progressive, metastatic medullary thyroid cancer had been limited until recently. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors have garnered increasing interest in this subset of patients. The US Food and Drug Administration recently approved cabozantinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, af...

Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a rare malignancy originating from calcitonin-producing parafollicular C cells of the thyroid. Neither radiotherapy nor chemotherapy has demonstrated durable objective responses in patients with advanced MTC. Vandetanib and cabozantinib are the 2 tyrosine kinase inhibitors recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, which are not affordable for...
متن کاملCellular Signaling Pathway Alterations and Potential Targeted Therapies for Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma
Parafollicular C-cell-derived medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) comprises 3% to 4% of all thyroid cancers. While cytotoxic treatments have been shown to have limited efficacy, targeted molecular therapies that inhibit rearranged during transfection (RET) and other tyrosine kinase receptors that are mainly involved in angiogenesis have shown great promise in the treatment of metastatic or locally a...
متن کاملNew Treatment in Advanced Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine tumor. Thyroidectomy, radioactive iodine, and TSH suppression represent the standard treatment for differentiated thyroid cancer. Since chemotherapy has been shown to be unsuccessful in case of advanced thyroid carcinomas, the research for new therapies is fundamental. In this paper, we reviewed the recent literature reports (pubmed, medline, EMBASE d...
متن کاملRecent Updates on the Management of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma
Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a rare neuroendocrine tumor derived from the thyroid C cells producing calcitonin. MTC accounts for 0.6% of all thyroid cancers and incidence of MTC increased steadily between 1997 and 2011 in Korea. It occurs either sporadically or in a hereditary form based on germline rearranged during transfection (RET) mutations. MTC can be cured only by complete resect...
